LaPlace, Louisiana is nestled between New Orleans and Baton Rouge next to the famous Bonnet Carré Spillway. It is a blue-collar refinery and commuter populated area with a majority of the homes built around two golf courses. Almost 32,000 people reside in the town and more than 46,000 people reside in St. John the Baptist Parish. Our town population has a lot of transient residents moving in and out. As one former member stated, “Like the changing seasons of nature, the makeup of the congregation of our church was constantly changing. The eyes of the church had to stay focused on God to survive the winds of change. Ecclesiastes 11:4 says, “He who watches the wind will not sow and he who looks at the clouds will not reap…”
First Baptist Church was the first baptist Church to serve the community of LaPlace nearly 65 years ago. We have 232 members and an average weekly attendance of 108. We provide Sunday morning services following Sunday School and Wednesday night prayer meeting. Our children meet on Wednesdays for Music and Missions. Wee Care provides child care three days a week. Our Summer VBS program reached nearly 150 children this year. A CARE Team ministers to homebound members, the men fellowship through Men’s breakfast, and a new Women’s Team has become active. We have a strong youth ministry under the direction of part-time Youth Pastor Brandon Foottit.
In 2003, we took on a debt of $1.2 million to build a Fellowship Hall and Preschool wing. The project began in March of 2006 and we are currently below $100,000 to pay off that debt. Our annual giving in 2018 was $453,000.
First Baptist Church is aligned with the Southern Baptist Convention. We affirm the Baptist Faith and Message 2000.
Our congregation, mostly Caucasian, is aging and membership is declining. This suburban area has a strong family orientation and we are embedded in a growing Hispanic and African American culture. We believe our church can do more to grow God’s kingdom locally by reaching both young families and persons of diverse backgrounds.
